Confronting the Intangible

WHO Matt Drews, the 24-year-old performer, choreographer, curator and teacher who moved to Seattle from Boulder, Colo. four years ago when a friend invited him to check out the area. “She stoked my curiosity in the vibrant art scene here,” Drews says. “I visited and immediately fell in love with the city.” Drews completed his degree in dance at Cornish College of the Arts and since then has performed with Saint Genet, Pendleton House, Kate Wallich + The YC, tEEth and last year choreographed a performance for Decibel Festival.

AESTHETIC TRANSCENDENCE “I aim toward compositions that are androgynous and confront the intangible, ephemeral, decaying nature of our physical world. My aesthetic philosophy is rooted in the creation of images and movements that allow the sacred and profane to transcend normality and standardization.”

THE LOOK “Fabrics with the quality of breath and transparency. Garments that have an inherent mobility and inspire elegance yet feel nested and bohemian. My ideal outfit: Severely dropped-crotch pima cotton pants from lululemon athletica (which double as a blanket when it’s shitty and gray and all I want to do is cuddle up), a unisex black dress from Montreal-based designer Rad Hourani and boots from John Fluevog.”

UPCOMING This month, Drews is in New York with Kate Wallich and Lavinia Vago hosting an open studio showcase at Dany Studios for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. In April, he’ll reunite with Kate Wallich + The YC to perform in “Splurge Land” at On the Boards. In the meantime, Drews is choreographing and performing with Modern Recollections, an experimental theatre company directed by Carl Lawrence. “To be completely wild and transparent,” Drews says, “my artistic dream would be to choreograph an opera with live score by James Blake and Nils Frahm, with costumes by Anna Telcs and Mark Mitchell.”
