Scared to Death: The Lure of Horror Film

MoPOP updates its horror movie exhibit Can’t Look Away for 2017, with director Karyn Kusama and actor/director Roxanne Benjamin joining fellow filmmakers Eli Roth, John Landis and Roger Corman as guest curators. This update features several new displays and many newly acquired props from horror classics.

Beware the Terror of Gaylord Manor

Seattle drag diva/RuPaul’s Drag Race finalist Benjamin Putnam, aka BenDeLaCreme, leads the ensemble in this mélange of cabaret, drag, comedy and burlesque full of paranormal investigators, werewolves, vampires and mummies. The cast includes Scott Shoemaker, Major Scales and Faggedy Randy.

This is Halloween

The Nightmare Before Christmas has become such an enduring holiday staple, it’s hard to fathom putting a new spin on it. Enter Can Can’s seasonal Halloween adaptation, which reconfigures Tim Burton’s classic animated film with a live presentation of cabaret, burlesque, multimedia weirdness and orchestral accompaniment.

The Nightmare Emporium – Horror Anthology

Anthology horror films are the terror junkie’s equivalent of a box of chocolates: They can afford to be uneven, as long as the ones that are killer exceed the amount of the filler. This particular anthology features several locally made segments centered around objects in a curiosity shop.

Carnevolar VIII: Phobia

Each year, the talented and daring folks at Emerald City Trapeze Arts train their skills on a brand-new Halloween presentation. Phobia marks the acrobatic collective’s eighth Halloween go-around, and this time they’re using their art form to bring a cornucopia of human fears to life.

The Black Heart Procession, Sam Coombes

Live music during the latter part of October is either cover bands or acts with no connection to All Hallow’s Eve. Thank the Dark Gods, then, for San Diego quintet The Black Heart Procession, whose incredibly dark weld of goth and Americana fits the season like a killer’s black glove.
