Since December 2012, we've been looking forward to revisiting Aham Oluo's orchestral-pop opus Now I'm Fine. Back then, composer-conductor-storyteller-trumpet player Oluo brought an 11-piece jazz big band and lyricist-singer okanomodé to perform the multi-movement piece at Town Hall. Now, in anticipation of the remount of Now I'm Fine at On the Boards in December, Oluo and okanomodé are releasing a studio recording of its musical component. Now I'm Fine captures the energy and elegance of the live performance but gives a more intimate glimpse into what was, in the moment, an almost overwhelming set of music.
To preview the album, they're offering a free download of "Mourning Bird," a short-and-sweet song that hints at the deep verve and virtuosity of Now I'm Fine. "The Goddess is alive/And I'm not afraid," okanomodé sings, and we believe.
Now I'm Fine will be available digitally on Dec. 9 and the performance of Now I'm Fine will run at On the Boards Dec. 4-7.
