Life in Layers

Kristin Zwiers’ "Fathom" is a digital double exposure combining two photos: one taken on a family hike at Saddle Rock in Wenatchee and one of a walrus at the Tacoma Zoo. “This image is part of a larger project titled Conundrum, which explores the complexities of roles as mother, wife and photographer,” Zwiers says. “Although I’ve heard many reactions to this piece, to me the walrus symbolizes the ominous and somewhat heavy nature of motherhood, while the children, playful, are often oblivious to this ever-present being.”

"Fathom" is on view at Photographic Center Northwest through Aug. 15 as part of the PCNW Thesis Exhibition featuring work by Zwiers, Suzanne Fiore and Andrej Gregov.
