Super 8 Brothers: A day in the country
Chris: Greg, let’s take it to the country this week. All this wet weather has me thinking back to some great camping I did last year.
Greg: Sounds good, Chris. I’ve been a little itchy to get out of the city, and maybe a nice scenic drive is what we need. You know, check out the far eastside.
Chris: Last October I got to shoot in one of my favorite areas of the state, the Columbia Basin. The Grand Coulee is one of this region’s most dramatic geological areas, and its reservoirs are important for power production and agricultural irrigation. Canyons rise from shrub-steppe valleys to meet big, big sky (sorry, Montana). Driving along Banks Lake, it’s hard to imagine you’re only four hours from Seattle.
Like last week’s Aurora footage we posted on the CAB, this was one of the first rolls of Super 8 film I ever shot. I learned a couple of things. First, black and white super 8 film is good for close and medium shots, but can be a little tricky at long range. Second, it’s important to use panning sparingly. I didn’t edit anything out, so you can see what worked well and what didn’t. Either way, this film is a fond memento of a day spent with good friends. Enjoy some shots of the world’s hippest dog, Bailey, and some tunes from Genevieve.

Greg: I didn’t go quite as far east as you, Chris, but I did head out on Highway 202 to check out what was happening in the outskirts of King County. I spent a few years delivering grain out there every day to local farmers. These images were shot during the fall season on roads between Carnation and Fall City. After endless trips along those highways, I have found regular spots to check out some of the local wildlife (can you spot the coyote?). Enjoy the film and “Yardwork in November” by the Actual Tigers.

Greg/Chris: Check back every week for more S8B films and commentary. Until then, happy shooting!
