14 Illuminating Things from the Weekend: City Arts Fest Edition

1. A box of fifty plus gift bags is too heavy for me to lift. (But not for our vice president!)
2. DJ Riz Rollins is a profound man, who rocks a backpack and profoundly awesome blue suede skater shoes.
3. Musical theatre doesn’t get enough credit. Reliant on a blend of comedic and musical genius, I appreciate it more now as a kind of science. In which people dance in v-formation.
4. I think I may like Tilson’s freestyle monologuing more than his music.
5. Our bookkeeper is a celebrity magnet. (Or, celebrities are really good at sensing who is in charge of the money.)
6. The Coyote Ugly girls never ruled a bar like me – by which I mean, hand-dried it in less than two minutes on their hands and knees so braver women could strut across it safely in six-inch platform heels.
7. You know you’ve successfully pushed the community beyond their comfort zone when you hear organizers referring to the headliner as “Cat Powers.”
8. People really, really want their gift bags.
9. People really become dedicated storytellers when they want a refund.
10. The Fireside room has a tough time keeping their tables standing up and their glassware in one piece.
11. Absinthe is not a hallucinogen and never has been. (I have serious questions for a few high school and college friends.)
12. I think certain venues are trying to seduce you. What else could explain the headache-inducing red lights?
13. Chapel, Sorrento and Vito’s make great cocktails. Town Hall has a very conveniently placed water fountain. I appreciate both of these things equally.
14. I am a big fan of City Arts Fest. But I am still a wimp when it comes to music shows. I think I need better arch support.
