"He's like a really fast car..." Paul Budraitis at OtB

“I have no idea what we are ultimately going to see at the show,” muses Lane Czaplinski, Artistic Director of On the Boards, when speaking about this weekend’s performance of (IN)STABILITY.

According to the OtB website, the show, opening tonight, is a performance by Paul Budraitis consisting of “multilayer storytelling, quasi-standup comedy and a highly physical aesthetic.”

“Paul is a really intense, compassionate artist,” Czaplinski explains, “and so when you are around him, in his presence, you’re going to feel that intensity.”

Budraitis is a Seattle-based writer, performer and director who spent seven years in Lithuania directing contemporary theatre. After moving back to Seattle several years ago, he began to develop (IN)STABILITY through various workshops including Annex Theater, 12 Minutes Max, Solo Performance Festival and the NW New Works Festival.

Czaplinski explains that in Lithuania one is a director, a writer or an actor, but not all three at the same time, so while abroad Budraitis was pigeonholed into the position of director. Back in the states he can explore his passions across artistic lines.

“I think [Paul] is interested in pushing himself in a lot of different ways,” Czaplinski expounds. “Him coming back into this environment…I think he was really excited to write things while he was performing and conceptualizing. To watch him perform … he’s like a really fast car, like a Porsche.”

In typical On the Boards fashion, that doesn’t exactly explain what patrons will see at the show, but it does create some intrigue. And come on, who doesn’t like a Porsche?

The show is already sold out, but you can get on the waiting list for tickets here
