The Curator's Eye

Portrait of a Young Shoe-Gazer. Prestin M. Yoder, painter

Selected by Jill Sonsteby, curator, Blaubak Gallery

The Holes in Your Shoe,
36 x 24 inches

I started painting in junior high school; there was a competition and I didn’t do very well. I reentered the next year and did better — I guess I have been painting ever since.

This painting is called The Holes in Your Shoe. The title is about a kind of music I connect with called “shoe-gaze music,” played by bands like Cool Hand Luke. I was also thinking about the idea of something coming out of nothing.

When I paint, my impulse comes from a period of meditation. I need a painting to have a purpose, rather than just be something pretty. I often think about a painting for a long time before I actually touch a canvas. — P.Y.
