Style Profile: Winging It
- Marie-Caroline Moir — June 30, 2010
Fashion is no conscious pursuit for Joseph “Josie” Markiewicz, who just completed his first poetry manuscript, Somewhere a Clown Dies Laughing; his style is purely intuitive. Even so, we’d all do well to take a page from his book and dress with a dash of insouciance.

Describe your style in three words: Romantic, weathered, gentlemanly.
Who are your style icons? I identify with the mythology of a person’s style. Like Tom Waits: his songs sound like a dirty old pair of Levi’s sometimes, and an umbrella full of holes at other times, but his style is unique at all times.
What is your fail-safe clothing item? My old brown wingtips.
Do you have any items you will never wear, but won’t give away? Half my hat collection. I have hats that have been across this country more times than the wind.
What style values were instilled in you as a kid? I learned pretty early that slight modifications and the occasional colorful accessory can make you look more like how you feel and less like what you can afford. I also learned how to use a sewing machine and a glue gun.

Any style pet peeves? I don’t understand why an otherwise beautiful woman would wear a pair of Ugg boots. If you could blow all your cash on one item, what would you buy? Something I could share with my friends, like a bottle of Hussong’s or a cow’s worth of ethically raised steaks. What inspires you? Love, injustice, hope, beauty, hurt, that tiny spark that makes things animate, seasons and their smells, the interiors of international taxicabs, sweat, regret, sex, the ebb and flow of all things in correspondence, selflessness, dirt, tears, alleyways, ivy, teeth, etc. Which style rules do you love to break? Working in Ballard while not having a beard. • |
