Did you know that Seattleites were not immune to the scourge of Beatlemania?
It’s true! After the Sound Point Naval Air Station was deactivated in 1970, there was a mighty wrangling among various groups over what to do with the land that had housed it. In 1977 Warren G. Magnuson Park officially opened, though there was still a naval presence on the grounds. This continued until April 12, 1991, when Cheney recommended closure of the remnants of the naval base. After another tussle over land claims, an additional 151 acres were given over to the city for fun and frivolity. •
