Out on the Range

Arts Downtown, the outdoor gallery in Puyallup, will install eleven new works among its existing sculpture collection on March 28. The most popular works — determined by votes from gallery visitors — will be purchased by the City of Puyallup, which owns over sixty pieces on display already, including Buckeye by Dan Klennert. The gallery is also hosting the come-as-you-are fundraiser, “Put a Little Art in Your Soul,” on April 18. See artsdowntown.org for more info.

Quid Pro Quo

Started by Linda Lapping DeSantis, Maureen McHugh and Mary Kay Johnson (above), Barter Tacoma is a “trade organization,” better known as the cork board hanging at Mad Hat Tea Company. Participants exchange services and products by writing down Haves and Needs. For instance, fireplace repair in exchange for graphic design. With boards all over town, the hope is to build foot traffic at local businesses while also encouraging recycling.

Why Save Murray Morgan Bridge?

Brett Santhuff, vice president, Historic Tacoma: Because we know that saving it is the most practical and least expensive way to maintain the crossing.

Jamie Paulson, software developer: It is an iconic symbol of Tacoma. We must repair it, if only to make possible my vision of a public market and minor- league ballpark.

David Boe, principal, Boe Architects: It is about the past and future, not necessarily the present. If the promise of the Thea Foss Waterway is to be fulfilled, this bridge is the vital link.

Blog Digest

Finders Keepers: jdub writes on Exit133.com, “I came across the “ox” Monkeyshine sitting right in the Union Avenue median. My daughter gave me that non-smile that all teenagers possess, but I could tell she thought it was waaay cooler than a juicy culture shirt."

Hard Times: On the SPEW, Unemployed in Tacoma reflects, “If you’re as unemployed and bored as I am, what better way to spend your extra time than helping your neighbor? Volunteer. It’s likely to curb your creeping depression.”

A Devoted Commenter on Exit 133’s forum: “Note to the owners of the Bridge of Glass. When I take visitors across the Bridge of Glass, I would love to let them enjoy it, but we have to hurry by so they don’t notice the bullet hole and shattered glass.”
