Around Town

Beautiful Mess
Artist David Joel works quickly but meticulously on a mural inside Darby’s Café in preparation for Olympia’s annual Spring Arts Walk. The event took place this year on April 23 and 24.

Chalk and Awe
For the April 9 session of the weekly Frost Park Chalk Challenge, comic artist R. R. Anderson continued to skewer things that Tacomans like for reasons beyond his comprehension. The week before, Anderson took on city council member, architect and former City Arts cover subject David Boe as the first in a series titled True Grit Spirit Capture Chalk Portraits. On this beautiful Friday he decided to deliver the one-two punch to Daniel Blue and Aaron Trotter, who, as we have reported in recent issues, have been flirting with leaving the City of Destiny behind.

Spirited Display
Hours before his band Mercy Me took the stage at the Tacoma Dome, front man Bart Millard received a commissioned portrait from local painter and Spirit Capture proprietor Robbi Firestone. The first stages of the painting were completed following a 2009 Memorial Coliseum show; Firestone watched the performance and then went backstage and sat at her easel with an exhausted Millard as her subject.
