- Jonathan Shipley — October 1, 2010
![]()
Did you know that the University of Washington’s Tacoma campus opened on the birthday of this writer?
It’s true! On October 1, 1990, cake and ice cream were enjoyed in the Shipley home as the University of Washington began classes in the Perkins Building in Tacoma with 176 students. The university’s decision to construct the campus downtown helped bring about the urban renewal we see today. In 1997 the university moved to its current home on Pacific Avenue and now serves approximately three thousand students. •
