Did you know that the daughter of Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles lived in Tacoma?
It’s true! Rebecca Welles was born in Santa Monica, California, on December 17, 1944. At the time Hayworth was considered one of America’s greatest sex symbols (her pregnancy upset the studio chief), and Orson Welles was at the peak of his career as one of the world’s finest filmmakers, with Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) under his belt. After growing up all over the world, Rebecca decided to attend the University of Puget Sound, where she received an arts degree. She lived most of her life quietly in Tacoma with her husband, Guy Manning, until her death in 2004 at the age of fifty-nine. •
