Gauguin and Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise

Whether you’ve grown up relishing the remoteness of the Pacific Northwest or migrated here, moved by its natural charms, you’ve got something in common with Paul Gauguin. The artist’s longing for ever more remote and exotic slices of paradise is reflected in his life’s work. Unlike previous exhibits that used Pacific Island objects as a visual backdrop to Gauguin’s work, this exhibit—only appearing at SAM—will be split 60/60, promising new insights into the 19th century’s dynamic relationships between Europeans and Pacific Islanders.
