Intiman Feels the Love

Tony-nominated Daniel Breaker hosted Intiman's Valentine's Day Cabaret.

On Monday, February 14, Intiman Theatre raised $48,000 towards the $1 million goal needed to keep the theatre open.

Despite the recent announcement of severe financial crisis, Intiman forged on with its Valentine’s Day Cabaret, a night of love-themed music featuring the songs of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, The Beatles and more.

Hosted by Tony-nominated Daniel Breaker, who quipped laughingly with the crowd about charging $50 for drinks at intermission, the show was packed with young talent including Colman Domingo, who performed Nina Simone’s I Loves You Porgy, Nick Garrison singing Cole Porter’s In the Still of the Night, and Kylee Rousselot, whose rendition of Piece of My Heart would have made Janis Joplin proud.

The duets were real crowd pleasers, and two of them included the gorgeous Condola Rashad, who recently appeared in Intiman’s Ruined. The first was a spirited singing of Baby It’s Cold, performed with Breaker, in which the latter jested in between verses about the sexual innuendos of the song. The audience responded with cheers and bursts of laughter. Rashad and Rousselot joined forces in the second duet, Smokey Robinson’s You Really Got a Hold on Me.

The call for donations was made at the show’s opening, with the incentive that for every $1,500 donated, the donor would receive several nights’ accommodations at hotels in places like Napa Valley and Victoria. The call was answered with many liberally written checks.

“Intiman's Valentine's Cabaret was a success in many ways,” reported head of communications Becky Lathrop. “The performance was phenomenal and we are so thankful for the musicians who shared their talents with us. The support we received was very generous and has provided momentum and encouragement during this time.”
