ACT is one of Seattle's theatrical stalwarts, founded in 1965 as a place for producing contemporary theatre, to complement the recently founded Seattle Rep's exclusive programming of classics (both companies now produce both new and classic plays, of course). Now housed in the gigantic old Eagles building downtown, ACT boasts a whopping five performance spaces, including a traditional thrust stage, an in-the-round space and an intimate cabaret venue, a small black-box theatre and a repurposed events space that can be configured in just about any way a company imagines. ACT's own programming tends towards the more contemporary—recent seasons have featured Anne Washburn, Ayad Akhtar, Yussef El Guindi and Martin McDonagh—along with some classics, while its ACTLab program presents small works from great local companies like Azeotrope, The Hansberry Project and The Seagull Project.
